“Timpul liber” şi manfestările sale la Sighişoara în a doua jumătate a secolului al XIX-lea

The society of Sighişoara analyzed in the study is a representative pattern as regards the forms of socialization, the passing the free time and the entertainments specific to the German towns in Transylvania in the second half of the 19th century. Characterized by a long urban tradition and by a powerful social cohesion, the bourgeois society of the German towns of Transylvania brought from the Middle Ages associationistic forms of socialization and specific modalities of entertainment. Besides the traditional games and diversions, characteristic to the young generations (pupils, teenagers), the study shows that forms specific to modern leisure appeared in the investigated age, such as sport and tourist associations, which practiced holiday trips, walking tours, mountain tourism, cycling, but some really bourgeois and elitist forms of entertainment as well, such as theatre performances or musical concerts given by the prominent personalities of the age.

In 1850–1900 the society of Sighişoara was deeply affected by the spirit of the age. Notions related to leisure time and the specific modalities of spending this were the integrant part of this spirit. The paradigms of the age prefigured with increasing clarity that atmosphere which characterized the European society until the First World War, and which is known in history under the denomination of “la belle époque”.
