Abstract:

Railway stations and gardens in Transylvania during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy

The railway station was not an integral part of the city. The railway station was the first public service institution in the city to be located outside the central area, on its outskirts. It became the gateway to settlements: a point of arrival and departure. Railway stations and the green belts formed around them are a less researched area in both historiography and the history of technology. The purpose of this study is to present the development of railway stations, parks, gardens, and plantations along the railways in Transylvania and to offer a perspective on their historical past.
To mitigate the atmosphere of heavy traffic and a polluted and congested environment, railway companies attempted to create green spaces and flower beds at the meeting point between settlements and the station when designing the first stations and stops. Passengers arriving at the station were thus greeted by a friendly environment, and the well-maintained green belt provided an excellent opportunity for those who wanted to travel or were waiting for passengers to spend time in a pleasant environment, especially when the weather was nice. The trees and shrubs planted near the station building absorbed dust and smoke and created a more familiar atmosphere in the industrial area.
